Pregnant? Call San Diego Chiropractor for Prenatal, Postnatal and Baby Care

A woman’s body goes through huge changes when she’s pregnant. Ligaments loosen, organs are repositioned as the baby grows, spinal curvature changes, hormones race—it’s amazing. As these changes occur, they can cause pain and discomfort—sometimes even injury. Back pain is one of the most common pregnancy complaints. And while over-the-counter painkillers are harmful for both mom and baby, chiropractic treatment is safe, effective and comes with many benefits. Dr. Herfindahl successfully helps women through the entire prenatal and postnatal process so they can have more comfortable pregnancies, deliveries and better health as they recover and get to know their new babies:

Pregnancy Back Pain Relief

Well over half of women report lower back pain during pregnancy. As the baby grows, a woman’s center of gravity changes. Ligaments and muscles strain and the spine changes curvature, sometimes leading to SI joint injury. Occasionally the baby pinches the sciatic nerve. It can be worse for women who had back pain before they were pregnant. Regular chiropractic treatment before, during and after pregnancy can provide welcome relief.

Pregnancy Headache Relief

Pregnancy hormones can also increase headaches for some women, yet it’s dangerous to rely on NSAIDs for pain relief, both generally, and for the growing baby. Regular visits to your chiropractor for spinal adjustments can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches.

Repositioning a Breech Baby to Reduce Delivery Pain and Injury

Our chiropractor is very experienced using the “Webster Technique”—a chiropractic adjustment specifically designed to help correct breech positions. Even if the baby isn’t breech, this treatment aligns the mother’s lower back and pelvis for a faster, easier, less injury-prone delivery in general.

Spinal

I came to Dr. Herfindahl because I was experiencing lots of neck strain and tension as well as tingling in my arm and hand. It was really helpful to see my X-rays and see the spinal alignment issues that were causing the problems. With regular adjustments, the pain and tingling subsided dramatically. When my husband and I discovered that we were expecting our first child, Dr. Herfindahl was ready with alternate positions for my adjustments so that I would be as comfortable as possible. As I continued visits throughout my pregnancy, we were able to address the typical “pregnant lady” aches and pains, which were caused by my loosening ligaments. I’m sure these regular adjustments contributed to the ease of my delivery, which was quick and free from complications. Dr. Herfindahl, Heather and Liz have always been so warm and welcoming to me during my time at the office, and have extended the same welcome to my baby daughter as she now accompanies me on my visits. I would highly recommend Herfindahl Chiropractic to anyone looking for effective, family-friendly chiropractic care. -Julie Marriott-

"Chiropractic Care Helped my Pregnancy"

My journey at Herfindahl began in my last few weeks of pregnancy. A neighbor recommended the office when I expressed my worry of needing my son to flip in my womb. The doctor is well known for working with pregnant women Miraculously my son right before my first adjustment. However, there were plenty of other things I needed Dr. H’s assistance with at the time so I continued attending. I was dealing with (some times debilitating) spasms stemming from my shoulder down to my hand along with neck aches/stiffness that has been with me for years. After a few months of adjustments and traction (after my son was born) my muscles started to feel stronger and pain subsided. The exercises taught and the block seemed to work absolute miracles when diligent with them. Now my son is 9 months and my body is keeping up with him just fine.

We love coming in weekly as a family. The heart opened staff Liz, Kyla, and Doc have become a piece of our family and bring joy to our healing experience and life.

I would recommend this place to anyone to help better their health and wellness because I believe chiropractic care is absolutely essential.

Thanks for all that you’ve done for our family!!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy helps maintain proper spinal alignment and pelvic balance, which can reduce back pain, improve mobility, and support overall wellness. It may also contribute to a smoother delivery by optimizing the alignment of the pelvis and reducing tension in surrounding muscles and ligaments.
How can chiropractic treatments help alleviate common pregnancy-related discomforts like back pain or sciatica?
Chiropractic adjustments relieve pressure on the nerves and improve joint mobility, addressing common issues like back pain, sciatica, and pelvic discomfort. By realigning the spine and pelvis, these treatments reduce strain on the body, providing relief and improving posture.
Is chiropractic care safe during all stages of pregnancy?
Yes, chiropractic care is safe during all stages of pregnancy when performed by a trained prenatal chiropractor. Specialized techniques and equipment, such as pregnancy pillows or adjustable tables, ensure the safety and comfort of both the mother and baby.
What techniques do prenatal chiropractors use to ensure comfort and safety for both the mother and baby?
Prenatal chiropractors use gentle, non-invasive techniques tailored to pregnant women, such as the Webster Technique, which focuses on aligning the pelvis and reducing tension. Specially designed tables and cushions accommodate the growing belly, ensuring comfort and safety during adjustments.
How often should a pregnant woman visit a chiropractor?
The frequency of visits depends on individual needs and the stage of pregnancy. Generally, pregnant women may benefit from weekly or bi-weekly visits during the early and middle stages, with more frequent visits in the third trimester to prepare for delivery and address increased discomfort.
Can chiropractic care help with breech positioning in the late stages of pregnancy?
Yes, chiropractors trained in the Webster Technique can help create optimal pelvic alignment, which may encourage the baby to move into the proper head-down position. While chiropractic care cannot guarantee a breech correction, it can support a more favorable environment for the baby’s movement.
What should a pregnant woman expect during her first chiropractic visit?
During the first visit, the chiropractor will conduct a thorough consultation, reviewing the patient’s medical history and pregnancy-related concerns. A gentle physical examination will assess spinal alignment, posture, and pelvic balance. The chiropractor will discuss a personalized care plan to address the patient’s specific needs and ensure a safe, comfortable experience.
